Texas Toast Steak Sandwich

Looking to elevate your sandwich game? This deliciously cheesy and hearty meatball mozzarella sandwich, made with freshly toasted baguettes and a rich marinara sauce, hits the spot! Perfect for a cozy lunch or a quick dinner, it’s a true crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Sandwich

  • 2 Italian baguettes
  • Freshly grated mozzarella cheese
  • Freshly chopped basil leaves
  • 4 tbsp softened butter
  • Olive oil
  • 2 cups marinara sauce (like Rao’s)

Meatballs

  • ½ lb ground beef (80/20)
  • ¼ cup Italian breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 whole egg
  • 2 tbsp freshly chopped parsley
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • Pinch of salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning

Method

Step 1: Prepare the Pan
Coat the bottom of a skillet with olive oil and preheat over medium-high heat.

Step 2: Make the Meatballs
In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, parsley, garlic, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Mix until well-blended and shape into six meatballs, about 1 ½ inches in diameter.

Step 3: Sear the Meatballs
Once the oil is hot, add the meatballs to the skillet. Sear for 3-4 minutes on each side until a golden-brown crust forms.

Step 4: Simmer in Marinara
Lower the heat to medium-low, allowing the skillet to cool slightly. Pour in the marinara sauce and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes until the meatballs are cooked through. Remove from heat.

Step 5: Toast the Baguettes
Preheat the broiler. Spread 1 tablespoon of softened butter on one side of each baguette slice. Place under the broiler and toast until golden brown.

Step 6: Assemble the Sandwiches
On each bottom baguette slice, spread a layer of marinara sauce, place three meatballs, add more sauce, and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese.

Step 7: Melt the Cheese
Return the open-faced sandwiches to the broiler for a few minutes, until the mozzarella is melted and golden.

Step 8: Add Basil and Serve
Remove from the broiler, sprinkle with chopped basil, top with the other baguette slice, and enjoy!

Each bite of this sandwich brings a taste of Italy with rich marinara, savory meatballs, and melted mozzarella all in a crusty baguette. Buon appetito!
