Black Friday Knife Set Deals: How to Pick a Set Worth Buying
Black Friday knife set deals are some of the best value you will find all year, but only if the set you buy is full of knives you will actually use. A 15-piece block stuffed with filler is not a deal at any price. Three or four well-made blades that cover every job in your kitchen are.
This guide walks through what a good knife set needs, what to ignore, and which Cooking Guild sets we would point you to at each budget. If you just want to see everything on offer, head straight to our Black Friday kitchen knife deals.
When is Black Friday 2026?
Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday 27 November, the day after Thanksgiving, with Cyber Monday on 30 November. If the set is a gift, there is no reason to wait for the day itself. Buying early means you get the set you want before popular series sell out, and plenty of time to wrap it.
What a good knife set actually needs
Most home cooks do 90% of their prep with three shapes. Get these right and everything else is a bonus.
- A chef knife or gyuto (7 to 9 inch). The workhorse for chopping, slicing and dicing. If a set does not have a good one, skip it.
- A utility or petty knife (5 to 6 inch). For trimming, portioning, fruit and anything too small for the chef knife.
- A vegetable specialist: santoku or nakiri. A santoku is fast and nimble for general prep. A nakiri has a flat edge that meets the board along its full length, perfect for onions, cabbage and squash.
A bread knife, paring knife, cleaver or steak knives are worth adding if you cook the food that calls for them. Anything beyond that is usually filler.
Five things to check before you buy
1. Steel and hardness
Look for a named core steel and a hardness figure (HRC). Around 58 to 61 HRC is the sweet spot for a home kitchen: hard enough to hold a keen edge for months, tough enough not to chip on everyday jobs. If a listing does not tell you the steel, that tells you something.
2. Fewer, better knives
A four-piece set of excellent knives beats a twelve-piece block of average ones every time. Count the blades you would really reach for, not the number on the box.
3. The handle
You will hold this knife thousands of times. Stabilised wood, burl and resin handles look beautiful and feel warm in the hand. Check the shape suits a pinch grip and that the balance point sits near the bolster.
4. How you will store them
Slotted wooden blocks can dull edges over time. A magnetic display block or a sheath keeps the edge clear of contact and puts your knives on show.
5. The guarantee
A good deal should come with a way out. Every Cooking Guild knife comes with a 99-day home trial, so you can cook with it properly before deciding, and a free lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.

Because of the solid wood block, these sets ship at our heavy-item rate, shown in the cart before you pay.
Buying a knife set as a gift
A good knife set is one of the few gifts that gets used every single day. Every Cooking Guild series now comes in a premium gift box that looks the part when it is opened on Christmas morning. When you order, add the recipient's name and address for delivery and we keep prices and receipts out of the package.
Not sure which series they would like? A chef knife and utility duo is the safest pick: every cook uses both, whatever they like to make.
Black Friday knife set FAQs
Are Black Friday knife deals worth it?
Yes, if you buy a set built around the knives you actually use. Check the steel, hardness and blade count, and make sure the seller offers a trial and a warranty so you are not stuck with a set you do not love.
How many knives should a set have?
Three to four is ideal for most home cooks: a chef knife, a utility or petty knife, and a santoku or nakiri. Add a bread knife or steak knives only if you will use them.
Is a Damascus knife set worth the money?
Damascus describes layered steel folded around a hard core. The pattern is beautiful, but what matters is the core steel and its hardness. A Damascus set with a quality core, such as AUS-10 or 10Cr15CoMoV at around 60 HRC, gives you both performance and a knife that looks special for life.
What if I do not like the set?
Every Cooking Guild knife comes with a 99-day home trial. Cook with it, and if it is not the sharpest knife you have ever owned, send it back for a full refund.
